How did Hostettler-Spezialzucker AG come about?

It all began in Bern at the end of the 19th century. At Lorrainestrasse 52 there was a distillery called Joh Hostettler. For decades it successfully supplied the Swiss food industry with its distillates. In addition, sugar mixtures were also produced there, but this was rather a small side business.

Unfortunately the Joh Hostettler distillery was not spared by the worldwide economic crisis in the 1930s and had to close down. His son, Fritz Johann Hostettler, who studied chemistry at the ETH, decided to make a fresh start and founded Hostettler Spezialzucker AG. To do so, he needed the existing equipment as well as his valuable knowledge and in 1940 he settled at Hohlstrasse 501, which also provided space for the family on the upper floor. However, his specialization was not in the distillation of alcohol, but in the production of liquid sugar.

The success was great and so Hostettler Spezialzucker AG has been in business for 80 years.
